Holy Metropolitan of Arta, Mr. Ignatios the 4th, known to the world as Nikolaos Alexiou, was born in 1945 in Kastania, a village near Arta. 

He took his secondary education in Arta. In 1964 he entered the Department of Theology of the University of Athens from which he graduated in 1969.

He was ordained as a Deacon in 1971 and as a Priest in 1974 by His Grace Metropolitan of Arta, Ignatios the 3rd.

He served as Preacher of Holy Eparchy of Arta during the years 1971-1988, when he was elected Metropolitan of Arta.
